Chapter 1 - Homeleaving

As Hattie Montgomery sat in class listening to her friends discuss this weekend’s homecoming dance, the first big event of their Freshman year in high school, she was filled with the biggest sense of FOMO she’d ever faced. In fact, Hattie couldn’t remember ever having a fear of missing out before this. Up until now, she’d always been included in any and all plans that her heart desired. She’d been Buckington Heights golden girl, until her fall from grace. Well, her family’s fall from grace that is.

“I am so glad Rose’s Occasions keeps a list of who bought what dress so that no one from the same school is allowed to buy the same one, or I would be totally screwed” said Emelia.

“Oh my God, I know. I can’t believe Chelsea would even try to buy the same dress as you and pretend like she didn’t know you’d already taken it. As if she could even look half as good in it.” Jessie responded.

“She has been ‘single white femaling’ you since we were 5 years old, Emelia, and I honestly cannot understand how you have put up with it this long. I would have literally strangled her by now” Ferra bemoaned.

Emelia waved her hand as if brushing it off because she was so far above it all and replied, “I genuinely feel sorry for the poor girl. And, did I tell you guys? She actually was trying to flirt with Tommy yesterday. As if she stands a chance. He’s been obsessed with me since he left the womb.”

Had this been a month ago, Hattie would have been completely engrossed in the conversation and in total agreement with the level of importance this topic was being given. She was simultaneously longing for the days when stuff like this was her biggest problem and completely disgusted that she had ever considered these things major life issues. Hattie Montgomery now knew all too well what real problems consisted of. Her life had completely turned upside down last week, and her backslide down the town hierarchy was of epic proportions.
